RCMSPL Season Update – April 17, 2020
Submitted By Jon Hebden on Friday, April 17, 2020
Good day Gentlemen,

I hope everyone is being safe, is healthy, and is doing their part to flatten the curve.

Recently, the league received our revised contracts from the city with an earliest start date of July 5th.  Even if the world rights itself before then, the parks department will need time to get the fields ready for play.  The executive is assuming July 5th will be our earliest start date.

We have been hard at work trying to make sure we salvage whatever season we are able and wanted to share our plans, as of today, with the league.  These are subject to change when new information becomes available but these are our thoughts as of today.

All league meetings and bat testing nights are postponed until further notice.  League fees will not be collected until a firm plan for the season has been put in place and communicated to the league

League Fees

  • We have fixed costs that the league is required to pay regardless of the length of our season.  These account for 16% of league costs
  • We have variable costs that account for the other 84%
  • Our regular season is 5 months long (May-Sept) and consists of 20 regular season games during May, June, July and August with playoffs in September
  • League fees will be calculated at 84% / 5 months = 16.8% per month reduction in fees for every missed month.
  • This means with a July 5th start date, league fees would be 16.8% per month x 3 months + 16% for fixed costs = 66.4%
  • Regular league fees are $1,800.  With the season being reduced to 3 months, league fees would be $1,800 x 66.4% = $1,195, actual charge would be $1,200 per team IF we start July 5th.
  • The season would consist of 3 months of play for July, August and September.
  • Any teams that have paid in full will receive a refund once final league fees have been determined.

The following is a list of costs that the league paid prior to the pandemic in preparation for the season.   While this is not a complete list, it shows the pertinent costs.

Fixed Costs

  •  Insurance fees to SPO (may be prorated and a refund issued)
  • Bat testing labels
  • Web-site
  • Statistician

The following is a list of some of the variable costs that will change with the shortened season:

Variable Costs

  • Diamonds
  • Balls – have not yet been purchased, we will only purchase what is needed
  • Light keys
  • Score books – will use SPO issued score book for this year to save the cost of printing our own
  • Umpires
  • Prizing

The executive continues to evaluate the situation and will do what is best for the league as new information becomes available.

If you have any questions, please reach out to any member of the executive.

Thank you and stay safe,

Jon, Brad and Brandi
