RCMSPL Update - June 9, 2021
Submitted By Jon Hebden on Thursday, June 10, 2021
Good day RCMSPL,

I want to provide you with an update for the 2021 season.

Our interpretation of the new legislation suggests that outdoor sports games, leagues and events are allowed in Step 2 of the Provinces Roadmap to reopening plan.

https://www.ontario.ca/page/reopening-ontario

While the Regulations for Step 2 have yet to be released, we are assuming they will be like the color-coded system previously in place which, in orange, allowed for:

Sports and recreational fitness facilities

  • Maintain 2 metres physical distancing, unless engaged in a sport
  • Increase spacing between patrons to 3 metres in areas where there are weights or exercise equipment and in exercise and fitness classes
  • Capacity limits, where physical distancing can be maintained:
    • Classes: 50 people indoors (10 per class) or 100 people (25 per class)
    • Areas with weights and exercise equipment: 50 people
    • No spectators permitted (except for one parent or guardian per child)
  • Active screening of patrons required (customers can use the online screening tool to help meet this requirement)

With this in mind, we have conducted a cost analysis and developed a budget for a 13-week season beginning on July 6th.

Based on a 24-team league, 6 divisions of 4 teams, the costs would be $1,300 per team.  This includes a 10-week regular season and a 3-week playoff to be concluded on September 29th.  This number MAY change depending on the number of teams that commit.

What we need now from all teams is a commitment to play.  Please email me with your intentions, either way.  For those teams that want to play, we require a $200 deposit by June 21st to make the divisions and redevelop the schedule.  Send your EMT to [email protected], put your team name in the comments section and use the password "Baseball".

The deposit is a non-refundable deposit if you decide not to play after your deposit submission.  If we do not have enough teams to run a season at an affordable rate, the deposit will be refunded to all remaining teams.  Realistically, we have had 8 teams drop out from our 2019 season, and I expect we will have more drop out given the shortened season and associated costs.

Given there are only 13 weeks left in the season from July 6th, and we are booking games on each available night, we WILL NOT be rescheduling ANY rainout games.  Every team will be at the mercy of the weather and will lose a game or two due to rain.  We simply do not have the diamond times available.  Any financial adjustments for rainouts will be calculated in the off season.

In addition, we WILL NOT be performing any initial bat testing for this season, nor will we be placing updated stickers on bats.  Instead, we are following the USSSA Bat Certification Program which states that only bats bearing the “new” USSSA logo, located on the taper of the bat, are allowed.  This logo is known as the “Thumbprint” and is shown below:

If the executive deems there is a bat that requires compression testing, we will do so to keep everyone safe and remove any and all bats that do not meet current compression standards.

Please remember that we will continue to take precautions to ensure the safety of our members.  This includes, but is not limited to, an online screening tool, social distancing precautions, varied start times and minimal late games to avoid exposure and crossover of teams on the diamonds.

We have obtained permission from the city to use the diamonds. That along with the commitment from our teams, schedule in place, and an online screening tool ready for use, has set us up nicely to commence our season. The final requirement we continue to wait on is the permission from the Province.

The RCMSPL has set a benchmark with the hope and intention to be able to play this year!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks,

Jon
